Earth Day Clean-Up at Deer Island

The Earth Day commemorations continued over at Deer Island. Mississippi Power teamed up with local businesses for a cleanup event.

More than 125 volunteers showed up from Mississippi Power, Beau Rivage, Harrah’s, the Hard Rock, Golden Nugget, DMR, and the City of Biloxi.

More than 20 tons of debris has been cleared up on Deer Island since the start of this clean up event years ago. Mississippi Power Environmental Affairs Director Michael Harvey said, “We’re starting our 17th year for Renew our Rivers. In those 17 years, we have moved over 400 tons of trash and debris in our service territory. So, Mississippi Power employees are passionate about the environment and I can’t think of a better way to give back.”

The goal each year is to create a beautiful Coast for guests and locals alike. Volunteers picked up trash with the intentions of leaving nothing behind, but footprints.

The City of Long Beach also got into the Earth Day spirit today. Community members met at the Long Beach Harbor for a beach cleanup.

They all met near the pavilion with the cleanup beginning at 8 in the morning. The beach cleanup concluded at 10 a.m.
