Driver charged in traffic incident that leaves pedestrian dead

Biloxi Police have charged a man with leaving the scene of an accident after striking a pedestrian who died at the scene.

Police say 70-year-old Lonzo Norris Payne was charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death. He was arrested without incident and taken to Harrison County jail. Bond is set at $200,000.

According to police, officers were called to the intersection of Main Street and Esters Boulevard about 5:45 p.m. Saturday about a crash involving a pedestrian.

Officers found the victim suffering serious injuries and rendered aid, but the victim died at the scene.

Witnesses told police the suspect fled and provided a description of the vehicle and a tag number. The vehicle was located after a search of the area and driver, identified as Payne, was arrested without incident.
