Donate Your Money Wisely: Check Your Charity This Holiday Season

Know where your money is going this holiday season by checking your charity with the Secretary of State’s Office.

“Mississippians are some of the most generous givers in the nation,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. “Over 1,300 Mississippi charities raised over $1-Billion in our State last year. That number does not include contributions to religious institutions.”

“Approximately 25% of those charities spend more than 35% of their funds on fundraising and management,” adds Secretary Hosemann. “We want everyone donating this holiday season to feel certain their money is going to a good cause.”

The Better Business Bureau recommends at least 65% of total expenses of a charitable organization should be spent on program activities directly related to the organization’s purpose.

Charities must be registered with the Secretary of State’s Office to solicit funds in the State of Mississippi. Each year, the Secretary of State’s office publishes a Report on Charitable Organizations in Mississippi. This report outlines the financial information of charities registered in the State, in addition to the percentage of charitable funds actually spent by a charity for its charitable purpose.

“Mississippians work hard for the money they earn. It is imperative you Check your Charity before you give this holiday season.” says Secretary Hosemann.

A copy of the Report on Charitable Organizations is available on the Secretary of State’s website by visiting our website at: http://www.sos.ms.gov/Charities/Documents/Charity_Guide.pdf
