Domestic Abuse Awareness Month begins

The Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence is beginning to spread awareness for Domestic Abuse Awareness Month.

Today, the organization visited the Long Beach Police Department to place purple ribbons that symbolize abuse awareness onto the police patrol cars.

The team will continue its purple ribbon distribution to other police departments along the Coast. Their next stop will be at Wiggins Police Department on October 13th.

Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence Communication Manager Rene Davis tells News 25 about one in four women are victims of domestic abuse as well as one in seven men. “Every year, we come out and try to put out into the community just how important it is that everyone be a part of fighting domestic violence and bringing those numbers down. It’s just a part of us coming together as a community to say that we’re not going to allow this to happen every year.”

The center’s crisis line is 800-800-1396. All victim services are completely confidential and free of charge.
