Dolphin stranded in Jackson County dies

The dolphin that has been stranded in Jackson County the last two weeks has died after being stuck in water not conducive for its health.
Dr. Moby Solangi with the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies confirmed the dolphin died from swimming in fresh water and needed to be in salt water.
After monitoring the dolphin, they made a request for an intervention to the government to rehab the mammal. Dr. Solangi says agencies did not respond in time. “We have conducted a necropsy and it looks like the animal died of lack of food and some skin lesions. This was a young male, was probably separated from its mother, whether the mother had died or it was sick and was not able to keep up with the herd. It was about a 180 pound animal, about maybe a year and a half old.”
Dr. Solangi says since we are in the nursing and birthing grounds, we will possibly see more incidents like this. For next time, he hopes state agencies will become more involved in the day-to-day decision making and the remote decision making from Miami and Washington could be streamlined.
