Dolphin Awareness Month
March is Dolphin Awareness Month and the Institute of Marine Mammal Studies wants you to be prepared if you see a stranded or distressed animal.
The spring time is typically when animals come to the Mississippi Sound and give birth. This causes a spike in stranded or injured marine animals along the Coast.
Officials at the institute tell News 25 there can be anywhere between five to 15 dolphins swimming in the Mississippi Sound at a time. They’re the only creatures in the world who can see with sound so it is important to reach out if you see a dolphin distressed in the area. IMMS Director Dr. Moby Solangi said, “This is like I said a very important area for dolphins, the largest dolphin population in the United States. This is also the largest nursery as I mentioned and this time of the year as they’re coming to give birth we’re going to see some sick and injured animals and we need the public to inform us and help us.”
If you see a distressed or injured animal call the Institute of Marine Mammal Studies at 888-767-3657.
