Dollar-for-dollar tax credit available for donations to early childhood education

The time to make a donation and receive a tax credit is coming to a close very quickly.

Individuals can get a dollar-for-dollar tax credit when donating to early learning collaboratives.

Pre-K is not mandatory in the state of Mississippi, so early learning collaboratives need to match funding given by the state.

At Delisle Elementary School, the pre-k program is completely free to the family, so the school relies on donations for the 100 four-year-olds they offer early learning intervention to.

In pre-k, children engage in educational play that helps build foundational skills before entering kindergarten.

“We’ve had pre-k for several years, and we’ve seen incredible growth in those who have attended pre-k compared to those who start as a five-year-old in kindergarten,” said Professional Development and Early Childhood coordinator Dr. Mandy Lacy. “We really believe in the power of early intervention and getting our children here as early as we can. We can start teaching them how to go to school, how to work with others, friendship skills, problem-solving skills, so when they get to Kindergarten, they’re more prepared and ready to learn.”
