DMR offering boat and water safety course
As we approach summer, you are likely to see more and more people out enjoying the water.
It is a state law that anybody born after June 30th, 1980 must attend a boating education course that’s certified through the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.
Mississippi Department of Marine Resources offers these classes free of charge and open to the public.
Class participants will learn the rules of the road, navigation laws, required equipment needed to operate a vessel safely, and much more.
Not only is taking the course mandatory, but it could also save lives. Captain of Marine Control Michael Strickland said, “This course is very important as well. We know that when it comes to boating accidents, that 77% of fatalities occur where one of the operators did not have a formal training such as this, so it’s very important, and it’s crucial to boat and water safety that you take this course.”
