DMR hosts 2017 Shellfish Conference

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is hosting the Gulf and South Atlantic States Shellfish Conference.
The three day conference started this afternoon, featuring speakers from DMR, the Food and Drug Administration, the Mississippi Department of Health and several universities.
Topics at the conference will range from monitoring red tides and vibrio to the status of the Mississippi oyster industry and oyster aquaculture. DMR Executive Director Jamie Miller said, “We’ve been down. Everybody is aware of that. I think we’re still about a year away from seeing the numbers that we want to get to. We’ve done a lot of things in the last year and a half. We’re gonna do some relays, everything to work toward increasing the production here in Mississippi.”
The conference takes place at the Biloxi Civic Center and will wrap up Thursday.
