DMR authorizes plans to reconstruct Lighthouse Pier in Biloxi

The City of Biloxi is working to reconstruct a popular pier and it just got the nod from the Department of Marine Resources.

Today, DMR authorized the city to move forward with plans to rebuild the Lighthouse Pier at Highway 90 and Porter Avenue.

The Harrison County Board of Supervisors is also on board.

A design has been submitted to FEMA and that is working its way through the approval process.

Plans call for the new pier to be built with concrete pilings and flow through decking with a protective rock jetty. City of Biloxi Public Affairs Manager Cecilia Dobbs Walton said, “Mayor Gilich has vowed to make this pier stronger and better and that’s what he is doing, going through that process to make it stronger and better. The pier has been damaged many times by different storms. One of the most recent besides Zeta was Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Now that process didn’t even get moving forward to being visible until 2008. Of course, being city government, working with FEMA, those rules and regulations to follow, it’s a process to go through. It does take a little bit longer than people would probably expect. The City of Biloxi knows that and we do apologize for that inconvenience, but know that the city is working to get it built back stronger and better.”

No word yet on when construction on the new Lighthouse Pier will begin.
