Discovering the Gulf Coast

Before tomorrow’s historical reenactment of D’Iberville’s landing at Fort Maurepas, guests could meet the cast and crew of the production.
Members of the 1699 Historical Society and Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce welcomed community members to gather at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art for business after hours featuring a special sneak preview of tomorrow’s performance which will give modern day Coast residents a glimpse back to the day that the place we know and love was discovered by European settlers.
Stopher Haug with the 1699 Historical Society said, “When we think about the landing back in 1699 what that really did was pave the way for the exploration of the entire Gulf Coast region. This is where the European, the French Canadians first landed and then from here in search of the Mississippi they found all of the regions we know so well across the Coast and thinking about it in that perspective it’s really like the Jamestown of the Gulf Coast and we think that’s how it should be recognized.”
Fort Maurepas in Ocean Springs was the capital of Louisiana in 1719 while the government buildings at New Orleans were still under construction.
