D’Iberville Police Chief Wayne Payne announces his retirement

After 47 years in a uniform, D’Iberville Police Chief Wayne Payne is calling it a career.

The D’Iberville police chief announced his decision to retire, effective March 11th, on Monday afternoon.

Payne became the chief of police for D’Iberville in 2007 after a career that spanned stints in Long Beach, Gulfport, and Harrison County.

Chief Payne began his career in public safety as a firefighter on April 1st, 1974. He then became a full-time police officer in 1976 where he worked his way up the ranks to become a police chief.

Chief Payne is known for his work not only on the job, but in the coastal community as well. “We’ve had a great, great run here at this city. Our citizens are just great people and they have supported us, our business leaders have supported us, our clergy has supported us and our school system. I couldn’t have asked for better partners.”

Payne says he believes the department is fully capable of continuing their job moving forward and has high hopes for the chief to follow.
