D’Iberville Lady Warriors discuss the benefits of soccer scrimmages in the summer

We’ve talked about high school football teams putting in the work during these hot summer mornings, but they are not the onlyfútbol” program preparing for the upcoming season.

Soccer teams all across the coast are also keeping the pitch warm. High school soccer teams may not officially begin their season until October, but the work starts months before the first whistle is ever blown.

Many sports use the summer time to practice fundamentals and ensure conditioning is implemented, but D’Iberville and other schools across the coast are taking it to the next level as they scrimmage the entire month of June.

Head girls Soccer Coach Paul Langham and two Lady Warriors tell News 25 the benefits of getting out there and competing as a team early.

“The summer season has basically become preseason nowadays. We try to get them out and about especially in June and a lot of teams across the coast play summer games in June,” said Coach Langham. “We practice probably two to three times a week  if not more just to keep the girls in shape and get them ready for preseason and/or August when we go back to school.”

“I really think because there’s a really big difference between just being with a ball and then putting it all together on the field because we do drills and stuff in practice like passing drills and communication, but when you put it all together and you see it come together, that’s the best and it really prepares you for the upcoming season,” said upcoming Senior Sanai Barnes.

“I enjoy doing scrimmages because it helps us build chemistry on the field and off and I think it helps most of the freshman and upcoming 8th graders because they’re so frantic and it helps them become not as frantic when we get to these games in our season. It will help a lot.” said rising Junior Nyla Breeland.

The Lady Warriors will continue to put in the work during the off season in hopes of seeing great progress for their upcoming soccer season.
