D’iberville High Archery Back-to-Back-to-Back State Champs
Last week, the D’Iberville High Archery Team became back-to-back-to-back state champions.
Archery is a game of precision; one small sway of the bow can be the keen detail from a win or loss. And here at D’Iberville High, they’ve mastered this along with the consistency of striking the bullseye.
“Amazing feeling, then second year we won again, that was amazing because back to back that’s like not very common. And then third year, this year was like the best because three championships in a row was not common. And it’s just an amazing feeling knowing that you are the best in the state three years in a row, ” says D’Iberville Senior, Landon Garret.
“Archery is such a mental sport, it really is. And it’s also a sport for all kinds of kids. I mean, it really is, it gets those kids that maybe don’t feel like they have a place in other sports to be able to get them so involved and love it. So much, ” says D’Iberville Archery Head Coach, Scarlett Rouse.
With the highest an individual can shoot being 300 points, the team would combine to shoot a total of 3,307 points out of a max score of 3,600 for the title win.
“They’re determined. It’s all about the dedication, the repetition and you see it in their practices. I tell them, you know, you practice how you play and you play how you practice and when they get in here and they don’t miss any practices and they come in focused, ready to get it go, and like they are striving to hit that mark of excellence each time, ” said Rouse.
As for the blueprint for the three-time state champs: “You always have bad days. You can’t let that put you down. So you have to just keep going through that and keep practicing and keep getting help and getting better, ” said Garret.
“But it’s important to take accountability and understand that it may not be a good day, but if there’s always tomorrow. Because without the dedication and the discipline for each person on the team, we cannot win,” says D’Iberville Junior Avary Peterson.
Even though they are just a few days off of their state title victory the team says their aim is already on the mark yet again. “It’s very exciting and I’m very excited for next year and hopefully we can get those four rings it will be really exciting for me so I can get one each year and I’m very excited and ready for that,” said Peterson.
