D’Iberville football wins first region 4 title since 2016

Ever since the inception of class 6A in Mississippi back in 2009, no region 4 school has ever done what D’Iberville is attempting to do as the newly crowned district champs.

On Monday night the Warriors locked up the region 4 crown for the first time since 2016, pitching a second half shutout at Harrison Central en route to a 20-13 victory.

No matter what happens against St. Martin on Friday, D’Iberville owns every relevant tie-breaker which tends to be the case for undefeated teams.

But did you know, even though Gulfport won 23 straight district games, there’s never been a perfect regular season in region 4 including non-district games.

Getting healthy is certainly a priority, heading into the playoffs, but so is being the first region 4 team to ever run the table. Head Coach Larry Dolan said, “We don’t want to lose one. I mean you go this far and you want to enjoy it, but I don’t want to lose to St. Martin going into the playoffs. So we’re going to get ready Wednesday and Thursday and go play Friday night and we’re going to try to get the last one. That’s a big rivalry and I’m new to it, but I know the St. Martin kids, they’ll be ready and will give us all they can. The thing about it is we’re going to get to host a first round playoff game.”

The other home playoff game is still up for grabs between the winner of Ocean Springs and visiting Harrison Central on Friday.

The only other unbeaten 6A teams heading into the final week of the regular season are Oak Grove and Oxford.
