Diamondhead Water & Sewer Plans New Admin Bldg.

The Diamondhead Water and Sewer District is looking to build a new administrative building, and their proposed budget is $3.4 million, money some residents say the city doesn’t have to spend. The multi-million dollar project will not improve water quality or supply and will not create a more effective sewer treatment system.

Residents say the Water and Sewer District has been charging higher fees than many surrounding cities and is now using the surplus of their payments to build what many feel like is an unnecessary building. Because City Hall has space to accommodate the administrative functions at no cost to citizens, many residents have voiced their concerns, prompting Mayor Tommy Schafer to make a statement.

Schafer says, "I share their concerns. It does appear to be a very expensive building, and when we spend public dollars, for all of us, I think it is important to determine if it is really necessary. Do we really need this building, and if so, is the location they are looking to build it in a good location?"

The new, more expensive complex will most likely be located near the old building, at the end of Park Ten Drive.
