Destination Waveland
Today, Waveland hosts its fourth annual Destination Waveland Celebration.
The Independence Day hooray kicked off this morning at 8 a.m. with a sand castle contest and will continue with bands, DJs, and vendors taking over the streets at 2 p.m. The fun doesn’t stop there. At 9 p.m., there will be a firework show off the pier.
Destination Waveland is a celebration born out of a tragedy. Back in 2015, a Waveland resident won the $50,000 bash for the city in the USA Today ‘Destination America Red, White, and You,’ national essay contest. Deputy City Clerk Tammy Fayard said, “They celebrate small communities who have trials. We had Katrina so they luckily chose us and it was such a success and the citizens loved it so much that we decided to keep it going and thanks to our wonderful board of alderman and our community we are able to keep it going.”
Anyone is welcome to the celebration and admission is free.
