Deputy U.S. Marshal from Jackson Co. Killed in Baton Rouge
A deputy U.S. marshal was killed Tuesday while serving an arrest warrant to a man wanted for first degree murder just north of Baton Rouge, LA.
The marshal, Josie Wells, 27, was from Jackson County and was a former East Central High School student and football player. Officials say Wells was trying to arrest a fugitive wanted in the slaying of a brother and sister. The fugitive, Jamie Croom, was shot and taken to a local hospital.
A neighbor says, “Well I was walking my dog. I walk my dog every morning, and I heard the gunshots, and the next thing I know, the police was coming from north, south, west, east.”
Wells was assigned to a marshal’s office in Mississippi. The last time a U.S. deputy marshal was killed in the line of duty was in March of 2011.
