Department of Justice Starts New Division in South Mississippi
The head of the U.S. justice department’s civil rights division says there’s more work to be done to guarantee the rights of citizens both in Mississippi and nationwide.
The head of the division, Vanita Gupta, spoke at a conference in Jackson, organized by Gregory Davis, U.S. attorney for the southern district of Mississippi.
Davis says he’s creating a four person section in his office to investigate and prosecute non-criminal rights violations. The group could consider cases dealing with voting rights, religious rights, housing discrimination and disability cases. Jeremy Eisler with the Mississippi Center for Justice said, “It’s incredibly exciting that we finally have a civil rights division with the US attorney’s office here in Jackson. I think it will make a huge difference for advocates such as myself and others at the Mississippi Center for Justice, as well as other advocates across the state.”
This new section welcomes information from the public regarding possible violations of our nation’s civil rights laws including, but not limited to, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Fair Housing Act and Service Members Civil Relief Act.
