Debra Cook not re-appointed to Long Beach School Board

The Long Beach Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday night not to re-appoint Debra Cook to her position on the board.

Cook tells News 25 that she was fully prepared to begin a second term and believed she had enough support to be brought back.

When she was given the news that she did not get re-elected she was surprised.

Cook says that one of the city’s board of aldermen members told her that they were going to appoint a new person and for one term.

Cook began her term in 2017 and accomplished several goals on the board such as the building of the new Long Beach High School as well as several other accomplishments.

“I just think not only did the Board of Aldermen miss an opportunity to put black representation on the school board, they missed an opportunity to put one of the forward thinking, thinking-outside-the-box, diverse candidate back on the school board.”

Cook says she hopes to run again for the position some time in the future.
