Dead dolphin on Biloxi beach
A dead dolphin was found this morning on the beach in Biloxi, just behind Shaggy’s restaurant.
Officials with the Department of Marine Resources found the dolphin surrounded by smaller, rotting dead fish. The 5 to 6 month dolphin had been dead for about two days before washing ashore.
An autopsy is being conducted to determine whether the cause of death is related to the continuing red tide algae bloom.
Executive Director for the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies, Moby Solangi, says it’s very unusual to have a red tide episode at this time of the year. “The water temperatures have to be warm and it has to have a lot of nutrients like fertilizer. So apparently this red tide has moved from Florida to Alabama, and has now come into the Mississippi Sound."
