Day one of the C-USA Baseball Tournament
Last year, the Southern Miss baseball team rolled into the Conference USA Tournament riding a 14 game winning streak.
That run came to an abrupt halt in the first round, leaving the Golden Eagles to win four elimination games leading up to Championship Sunday.
Last week, USM lost back-to-back games for the first time all season, perhaps alleviating some of that pressure as the red-hot hometown favorite.
But now, all that pressure is on the weather to simply cooperate as the Southern Miss-UAB game still hasn’t started.
We’re currently in our third weather delay of the second game between Louisiana Tech and Rice which got underway almost four hours late due to a pair of weather delays in the first game of the day between Florida Atlantic and FIU.
Conference USA is enforcing the NCAA rule for lightning within ten miles of the field of play, requiring play to be suspended for 30 minutes from the most recent strike.
In game two of the day, two seed Louisiana Tech taking on last year’s tournament champion, the seventh seed Rice Owls.
La Tech and Rice still in weather delay with the Owls leading 6-1 in the top of the seventh. No matter how this plays out, the biggest winner of the day might just be Coach Burroughs who didn’t have to sit through those stoppages in play following his ejection.
As for the early game, Florida Atlantic is on to the winner’s bracket with a 7-4 triumph over Florida International. There was supposed to be a fourth game played today but that has officially been postponed until 9 a.m. tomorrow.
As it pertains to the Golden Eagles, they’ll now play on Friday at 11 a.m. with a win tonight or at 4 p.m. Thursday with a loss.
