Dauphin Island Sea Lab Offers New Summer Program For High School Students

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s Discovery Hall Programs will be offering a new, week-long residential program for high school students for the summer of 2015. BayVoyager is designed to be an active outdoors, hands-on program for students in grade 9-11; students will participate in a variety of activities as they learn about Alabama’s marine environment, animals and plants.

“For decades the Sea Lab has offered a popular, immersive month-long academic class in marine science for students who are considering studying the field in college,” said Discovery Hall Programs Director Dr. Tina Miller-Way. “But not all students are able to commit to such an extended period of time.

“This new week-long program offers the same opportunity for students who love the ocean, want to make new friends, and experience a unique Sea Lab program that will change the way they think about coastal and marine environments.”

Activities will include kayaking local waters; exploring aboard the Sea Lab’s research vessel; designing and building a remotely-operated vehicle (R.O.V.); catching fish and maybe snorkeling along Dauphin Island’s beaches; and learning from the Sea Lab’s top-notch educators about marine plants, animals and habitats.

Dates for BayVoyager will be June 14th-19th, 2015; enrollment will open Jan 5th, 2015. For more information, email DHPSummer@disl.org, call (251) 861-2141 x7515, or visit http://www.disl.org/bayvoyager.
