Out of the Darkness Walk in Biloxi
September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. It’s recognized as a time to share resources and stories in an effort to shed light on the topic.
That’s just what the Out of the Darkness Walk at the Coast Coliseum did on Saturday. The walk gives people the courage to open up about their own struggle or loss and the platform to change our cultures approach to mental health.
They are proof that when people work together they can make big changes in the world. Out of the Darkness Walk Co Chair Theresa Danko said, “I lost my son six years ago to suicide. He was 19-years-old and this is how I found AFSP, American Federation for Suicide Prevention, in 2015. In August of 2015 is when we chartered our Mississippi chapter and we have been taken off since then and we are now being known throughout the state of Mississippi.”
The Out of the Darkness Walks are the American Federation for Suicide Prevention’s largest fundraiser. They produce millions for suicide prevention programs, unite those who have been affected by suicide, and create communities that are smart about mental health.
