Curbside recycling could make a comeback in Hancock County

Curbside recycling could make a comeback in Hancock County and waste officials are reaching out to see if there’s enough interest from the community.
Hancock County residents haven’t been able to leave recyclable waste bins outside their homes since before Hurricane Katrina. The Hancock Chamber Greenways and Scenic Byways Committee along with the Hancock County Solid Waste Authority have prepared a recycling survey to determine if there’s community interest to bring it back. The survey takes about five minutes to complete.
The Solid Waste Authority will review the surveys after they are completed to determine if the future of the program is necessary which organizers describe as a more convenient way to help preserve our Coastal environment. Hancock Co. Greenways and Scenic Byways Committee Chair Allison Anderson said, “Marine debris has a huge impact on the marine life out there and on the health of the water systems. We don’t want turtles eating straws. We don’t want fish ingesting plastic.”
Hancock Co. Greenways and Scenic Byways Committee Member Mark Isaacs said, “Recycling in Hancock County is not a one size fits all strategy. There are going to be some areas that will definitely support curbside recycling and participate at high levels and there might be other areas that might be happier with the existing dumpster situation. I’m hopeful that the commissioners figure out a solution that works really for everybody.”
You have until April 7th to fill out the survey. It can be found on the Hancock Chamber Greenways Committee Facebook page.
