Crimestoppers tip prompts officials to cancel middle school dance
A threat that came in to the Crime Stoppers tip line prompted D’Iberville Middle School officials to cancel a planned school dance on Saturday.
The message was sent out Saturday afternoon by middle school principal Matthew Elias and Superintendent William Bentz.
The tip said there was going to be a shooting at the dance. Crime Stoppers tips are anonymous by design, which would not allow police to trace the source .
For that reason, and to ensure the safety of students and staff, the dance was canceled.
“We are so sorry for the inconvenience and disappointment this may cause. We are continuing to work with authorities and make the recommended adjustments in the coming days,” Elias said in the message.
“We understand that this news may be alarming, but please know that we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our students and staff. We will update you with any new information as it becomes available.”
Elias and Bentz also encouraged parents to talk to their children about reporting anything suspicious or any threats they hear to school officials or law enforcement.
