All Creatures Big and Small benefit honoring Sophia Myers
The Gulf Coast community is still mourning the loss of seven-year-old Sophia Myers. To honor her, the Ocean Springs Lions Club is putting together a food and supply drive to benefit the Jackson County Animal Shelter.
Today, News 25 spoke with Angel Myers about the benefit and she says this is about keeping Sophia’s legacy alive and living for Sophia through her passion for animals.
“There’s no words still, just very moving and a very difficult time and knowing that people want to help us honor her is really appreciated.”
The Gulf Coast, still shaken after Sophia Myers passed away, is refusing to let her legacy die. In honor of Sophia, the community is coming together to celebrate her love of animals and donate to the Jackson County Animal Shelter through donation drives all over Jackson County. “We just have to live for her. She’s not here. We have to live for her and what better way to live like Sophia than to take care of the animals. She would pick a worm up off the concrete and put it in the grass. She’s got me and her grandmother doing it. She loves animals and she was just a kind soul,” said Angel.
Jackson County Animal Shelter Adoption Coordinator Maridee Mallette said, “She was a special little girl and it touches me, honors me, it makes me proud that she loved, not just the animals, but our shelter in Jackson County and wanted to do something for us and we want to honor her and we are in so many ways.”
As evidenced through social media, Sophia was always willing to help the homeless pets at the shelter in any way she could. “I made a Facebook post about how we needed kitten food and Sophia made a video and Angel posted it ‘please bring kitten food to Jackson County Animal Shelter.’ It means a lot,” said Mallette.
Through Sophia is no longer here, Angel says her story has touched hearts all over the world and for that they continue to fight in her memory. “She left a legacy and we’re going to fight for a cure so that nobody else goes through this and in the meantime we’re going to honor her everyday doing big and little things like caring for the animals and we’re just grateful for the community embracing us.”
