COVID-19 taking its toll on local schools

Students and staff in Ocean Springs School District started back last week and the district is already struggling under the weight of COVID-19.

Communications Specialist Trey Brennan tells News 25 that the district had its highest ever rate of positives among staffers at about 60.

Brennan says the latest report suggest nearly 90 students have tested positive with many more exposures.

Any time a student is exposed, the district emails the child’s parents to notify them.

To clarify, Brennan says pulling your child out of class after an exposure is optional, but if your child does return, keep an eye out for symptoms. “As things progress, we’re going to constantly be evaluating our best route to take and the best interest of the students. We’re going to keep that in mind. Because obviously we’re here to further their education but we’re also here to keep them safe and keep our staff members safe. So, we’re meeting every day, trying to stay ahead of this as much as possible, and every decision is made with that interest in mind.”

When asked about the possibility of going virtual, Brennen tells News 25 nothing has been ruled out.
