Coroner IDs bicyclist hit, killed on Seaway Road

A bicyclist who was on Seaway Road when he was hit by a vehicle on Monday night has been identified.

Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer said 35-year-old Lester Wayne Luper was hit in the eastbound lane of Seaway Road about 7:15 p.m.

He died at the scene from his injuries.

Switzer said the driver told authorities it looked as though Luper was stopped and looking down when a vehicle swerved at the last minute to avoid him. The driver in the car behind did not have time to react and hit Luper.

“The driver thought he was still and may have had a malfunction on his bike,” Swtizer said.

The incident happened less than a quarter of a mile east of Three Rivers Road, Switzer said. The bicycle did not have lights and that stretch of Seaway is not lit and was dark, Switzer said.

Gulfport Police is investigating.
