Controversy in the NFL
It all started in August of 2016-2017 NFL season when former 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the National Anthem, what he said was his way to protest racial injustices in America.
After President Trump’s recent comments, players, owners, and coaches across the NFL took knees this past Sunday to show their unity. The controversy surrounding the protest now has some boycotting their beloved NFL teams.
Yesterday News 25 caught up with Mississippi Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves who discussed his take on the situation. “Well, I’ll tell you that I am a lifelong Saints fan and I did not watch one down of NFL football on Sunday. The fact of the matter is they have a first amendment right to protest if that is what they choose and I have a right to not watch it and that’s the decision that I have made.”
Ten Saints players sat during Sunday’s National Anthem. Since then, Quarterback Drew Brees has publically announced that he believes you should stand with your hand over your heart during the anthem and that the moment should be used to promote unity.
