Construction begins on Davis Bayou bicycle and pedestrian path at Gulf Islands National Seashore

Gulf Islands National Seashore, in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, will begin construction of the Davis Bayou Bicycle and Pedestrian Path Project.

Phase one of the project will include closures of the northern section of Park Road between Highway 90 and VFW Road from January 4th, 2022 tentatively through Spring 2022.

Park facilities, including the Davis Bayou campground and William M. Colmer Visitor Center, along with the Gulf Coast research lab, and all residential homes will remain accessible during construction via a detour from VFW Road to Park Road.

Signs will be installed marking the detour route from Highway 90. Gulf Islands National Seashore Superintendent Darrell Echols said, “We will develop a multi-use path on both sides of Park Road from the entrance of the park down to Robert McGhee Road. The path will provide a safe access for visitors that are biking or walking or strolling with strollers. So, non-motorized use. So, it’s to separate our motorized use from our non-motorized use and create a safer environment.”

Once phase one construction on this northern section of Park Road is complete and reopened, the project will begin phase two work on Park Road from VFW Road to Robert McGhee Road.
