Connecting the community through literacy

Mississippi students and their families are participating in a statewide community literacy campaign called ‘Mississippi Reads One Book.’

Getting kids excited about reading is the goal of the ‘Mississippi Reads One Book’ literacy campaign. For the month of October, kids and their parents across the state are reading ‘The World According to Humphrey.’ This book teaches kids about good manners.

Breck Densing is a third grade student who says she enjoys getting to spend time with her family while reading. “Me, my brother, my mom, my little brother, and my dad, we all read it.”

It’s not only families at D’Iberville Elementary getting involved, special members of the community will be featured on trivia videos that are posted on the school’s Facebook page. Third grade Teacher Lindsey Byerley says she loves seeing her kids get excited about reading. “The kids love it. We’ve had all kinds and they get so excited and they get very anxious to see ‘oh who is going to be on tonight,’ so they really enjoy it.”

If your child’s school is not participating in this program, Byerley says reading with your child is always beneficial. “We’re hoping that we will have more readers that are reading at night. It’s so important for them to read and we encourage all of our students to read each night.”
