Community prepares for hurricane season

Hurricane season hasn’t rolled in yet, but authorities say it’s never too early to be aware and get prepared.
Emergency management officials, first responders, and members of our community filled up a classroom in Gulfport this morning for a general hurricane awareness course. During the class, the group was given advice on how to make the best decisions during a hurricane threat.
Hurricane season starts June 1st and ends November 30th.  National Disaster and Preparedness Trainer Micheal Lowry said, “Really there’s no place in the country that’s prone to big time hurricanes more than the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We want to give them the right information, get them at least to the right sources of information to make their decisions, whether or not they’re a school teacher, a superintendent, an emergency manager, a fire fighter, or just somebody that’s looking to protect their family.”
Emergency officials recommend making a plan, knowing your local evacuation routes, and keeping a disaster supplies kit stocked up in case a hurricane hits.
