Community gathers for Avenue of Flags Ceremony in Gautier

Community members and local leaders gathered in Gautier as they paid tribute to the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Avenue of Flags Ceremony took place in front of the Veterans Tribute Tower by City Hall. Families and friends gathered to honor their loved ones, dedicating flags as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude.

Hosted by the American Legion Post 1992, the ceremony included a solemn wreath presentation and the bell tolling.

Paul Mohning brought the ceremony to Gautier nine years ago, inspired by the memory of his father, who was honored with a flag in Le Mars, Iowa. “It’s something that’s very near and dear to my heart because a lot of today’s generation does not understand the true meaning of Memorial Day. It’s about those who paid the ultimate price.”

Mohning’s vision is to grow the number of flag dedications here, making it similar to the tradition back home. In Iowa, there are 1,500 dedicated flags, although they’ve been hosting it for almost 60 years.
