Community cleanup to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

A group of volunteers spent their morning cleaning up parts of Gulfport as a day of service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Volunteer Christene Brice said, “Dr. King would be so happy to know that we are working together. In the community they are working together with policemen, community leaders, pastors and so many coming together to make a difference and serve on this special day.”

For three years now, volunteers across the Coast spent their day off to help beautify Gulfport. Jeanine ‘GMama’ Handy said, “We got all the colors, black, white, blue, green, and purple, coming together and that’s what he was striving for, for us to come together.”

Working together strengthens their community. Many feel there is no better way to say ‘thank you’ to Dr. King than serving others. Volunteer James Bill said, “To take time from our busy schedules to show him that we appreciate what he provided for us many years ago.”

Extend a Hand, Help a Friend CEO Jeffrey Hulum III said, “For me to be from this community to see people from outside this community come into this community and say ‘hey, I’m here to lend my hand.’ People will give you money all day long, but when people give you their time and talent, that’s something that goes without saying because you can get your money back, but you can never get your time back.”

Trash bag after trash bag, volunteers are spending the chilly Monday morning working together to clean up their communities in honor of MLK’s legacy.

The event is sponsored by Gulfport police and Extend a Hand, Help a Friend.
