Commandant of the U.S. Marines visits HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding

It was an exciting day at Ingalls Shipbuilding, one high-ranking military official stopped by the shipyard to view the progress on some special warships currently under construction.

On Wednesday, Ingalls Shipbuilding welcomed Four-Star General Eric Smith, the 39th commandant of the United States Marine Corps, for an official visit.

While there, General Smith toured two amphibious warships that are under construction.

This marked General Smith’s first visit since the Navy announced the $9.6 billion amphibious multi-ship procurement contract.

Amphibs are used to land and support members of the armed forces in combat and their construction is vital in helping the Marines continue their service around the world.

Roughly half of Ingalls Shipbuilders build amphibious ships with suppliers located all across the nation that also help with each ship’s construction.

General Smith is a big supporter of Ingalls and its impact in Pascagoula and he says he enjoys the opportunities he has to visit the shipyard.

Ingalls Shipbuilding plans to roll out more amphibious ships.
