Come Fish Off My Boat
Five years ago BP set off the worst man-made environmental disaster in US History, leaving oil throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Today, oil still remains and continues to hurt the seafood industry along the Gulf Coast.
"Now I’m afraid we’re near a disaster here unless something happens quickly to restore our fisheries."
Tonight, Captain Louis Skrmetta rallied with fellow fisherman, invited the public to hear the cries of their struggling livelihood.
"Pass Christian reefs were the best producers in the region, better than Florida and Texas, now where do we get our oysters? Most of them are coming from Appalachia and Texas. It’s sad."
While BP reports of oil cleaned up along the Gulf Coast, fishermen do not agree.
Regardless of what BP is telling the media, oil is still here along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and local fisherman are fed up.
Restoring the seafood industry will not be an easy task, but fishermen feel more done by local government officials.
"Let’s figure it out. Let’s get that money and stop the pollution whether we need to upgrade these sewage systems along the bay. Do we need to move these oysters out and create new reefs south of Deer Island, Jackson County same way? That money can be used to restore our seafood industry."
