College Readiness in Local High Schools
Colleges and universities spend nearly $35 million annually on remediation for first year students in need of extra academic attention.
So what are local high schools doing to help better prepare seniors for college-level work?
Officials with the Gulfport School District say it’s a K through 12 process, but various resources are available to help high school seniors transition smoothly into a university. Gulfport High Principal Michael Lindsey said, “Whether it be our advanced placement courses. We also, about six years ago, offered dual credit courses. Our students are able to take college bio, college English, college science and college algebra for free on our campus. It’s just part of our curriculum.”
Forty-eight percent of Gulfport High School seniors further their education at a community college after graduation. Thirty-four percent go on to attend a four year university.
