College baseball and softball volunteer assistants now full-time

A game changer on the collegiate diamond today, the Division I council approved a measure to turn all volunteer assistants in baseball and softball into full time coaches.

First reported by Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball, adding those positions will become official on July 1st. Recruiting limitations also lifted from that fourth coaching position, rounding out a staff that includes a head coach, hitting coach, and pitching coach.

In response to the news, Mississippi State Head Coach Chris Lemonis exclaiming on Twitter: “Finally!”

News 25 also reached out to former Southern Miss volunteer assistant B.A. Vollmuth, who was on staff from 2016 to 2019 and considers this change “progress.”

Vollmuth helped lead USM to the College World Series as a freshman in 2009 and was drafted in the third round of the MLB Draft following his junior year.
