Cold weather shelters opening back up
With freezing temps in store for the Mississippi Gulf Coast over the next few days, the Salvation Army’s cold weather shelters are opening up once again.
South Mississippians are not typically equipped to deal with extreme cold temperatures and with this year’s winter being one of the coldest on record, finding shelter from the conditions can be a matter of life or death.
That’s where the Salvation Army steps in to protect the homeless people living in our area, but taking on such a large task requires public assistance through volunteer efforts and donations. Zachary Rhodes with the Salvation Army said, “This year we’ve already operated 15 nights of cold weather. It looks like we’re going to operate another six nights of cold weather shelter that puts extreme pressure on our volunteers, our staff here in the building as well as our supplies. If there’s anything you can do to help us out, if you can come by and volunteer for one hour to help us out. If you can drop by and give us some canned goods, if you can drop by and give us some blankets or pillows, we will be greatly appreciative of anything you can do to help the Salvation Army.”
Anyone interested in volunteering to help can call 228-207-2303 and donations can be dropped off at the shelter located at 2019 22nd Street in Gulfport.
