Cold weather shelters open in South Mississippi
Some people in South Mississippi are seeking refuge from the cold at several shelters that opened Sunday here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
That includes the shelter at the D’Iberville Multi-Purpose Building off Automall Parkway.
They are always in need of volunteers, even with the large community support behind them.
Windy Swetman, one of the organizers, received a phone call from Mary Mahoney’s wanting to donate food for the evening. “This is something that we anticipate, we are ready for. It’s just great to have good community partners and certainly our partners like Seashore Mission and Loaves and Fishes need the community support with donations so that they can continue with the services they provide here in South Mississippi. And it just warms your heart to be able to serve in your community and be able to help those in need.”
The Hancock County EMA and Old Spanish Trail Baptist Church will open a shelter tonight.
The Salvation Army opened two cold weather shelters. In Gulfport, the shelter located on 2019 22nd Street will be open for the next two nights from 4 p.m. to 7 a.m. The Jackson County Shelter located on 3217 Nathan Hale Avenue in Pascagoula will be opening this evening and Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
