Salvation Army opening cold weather shelter for those in need

In Pascagoula and Gulfport, the Salvation Army will be open as a cold weather shelter for those who need a warm, dry place to sleep during this week’s freezing temperatures.

From 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. today, Tuesday, and Wednesday, people without homes or shelters are able to find comfort during this week’s cold, harsh weather conditions. Dinner and breakfast will be provided each day for those in need.

Volunteers are also needed. Salvation Army Major Area Commander Bradley Caldwell said, “Folks that would otherwise be out in these terrible conditions and providing them some entertainment, some good food, a warm bed, someone to watch over them in the night so they feel safe. We’re thankful for the community helping to volunteer. We’ve already had some people take those shifts and offers from Feed my Sheep to send over meals when we need them. So, it’s a good community effort. It’s not just the army, it’s our neighborhood.”

Here’s a list of the shelters open to those in need in South Mississippi:

  • Loaves and Fishes, located at 610 Water Street in Biloxi, will have its shelter open at 5:30 today.
  • The Hancock County Emergency Management Agency opened its shelter through Tuesday, February 16th. That shelter is open from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m. at the county’s storm prep building located at 18335 HWY 603 in Kiln.
