Cold weather preparations
The Coast is gearing up for potential hard freeze conditions Tuesday night.
In this type of weather, it’s crucial to remember the four P’s: pipes, plants, pets, and people. The Mississippi Gulf Coast Area Command Office in Gulfport plans to do their fair share, taking care of people on the Coast, opening up their shelter Tuesday at 4 p.m. Mississippi Gulf Coast Area Command Office Volunteer Coordinator Roy Fisher said, “Being able to provide the shelter so they are out of the cold, especially when you are talking about 25-30 degrees, and rain and everything else. We want to make sure they are well taken care of. We are commissioned by God to do his work and to take care of his children.”
You must have a photo ID, be willing to a take breathalyzer test and checked for weapons before entering. “We serve meals at 6. During that time frame, we will be getting people checked in. We also partner with a local church that actually fixes biscuits and breakfast bags and brings them in. So, we will have breakfast for them as well.”
Moving on to pipes and plants, bring any plants you have outside inside your household or garage. In regards to pipes, it’s safe to leave your inside and outside faucets running at about five drips per minute. This will decrease the chances of your pipes freezing or bursting.
Can’t forget about the pets! The general rule of thumb is if it’s too cold for you, chances are its too cold for them. Humane Society of South Mississippi Volunteer Coordinator Valerie Kattz said, “If you don’t want to stay outside in that cold, don’t leave your pets out there. Please make sure you bring them in. Even when you are just letting them outside to go potty, put a sweater on them. That’s what’s going to help them stay warm.”
