Coast towns gear up for Mississippi Songwriters Festival

Although the Mississippi Songwriters Hall of Fame Award show at the Mary C. Theatre has been postponed because of COVID-19 precautions, the 12th annual Mississippi Songwriters Festival will continue on in downtown Ocean Springs and Gautier.

The festival will start Thursday with the kick-off party at the Neon Moon in downtown Ocean Springs. The show will feature some of Nashville’s premier songwriters. All shows for the four-day event are free.

Ocean Springs venues include Murky Waters, the Blue Merle, the Roost, the Julep Room with the finale Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Neon Moon.

Gautier venues are Azteca’s and the American Legion Hall.

Each year acclaimed singer/songwriters return to the Mississippi Gulf Coast from all over the United States in an intimate setting at the local venues to share their songs and stories.  Mississippi Songwriters Festival Board Member Darwin Nelson said, “You know we can’t all go to Nashville. So, let’s bring Nashville to us. So that’s basically what we have done. For the first three hours each night, we’ll feature local and regional writers. The last hour are these guys that have had big success in the music business, in the songwriting business. You will hear songs you had no clue who wrote them.”

If you are interested in songwriting or the business side of songwriting, workshops are still available for Saturday the 18th.
