Climb C.D.C. Announces Construction & Culinary Community Service Project at Quarles Elementary

In conjunction with the United Way’s Leo Seal Day of Caring, CLIMB Community Development Corporation (CLIMB C.D.C.) will provide YouthBuild AmeriCorps members to renovate a physical education room at Quarles Elementary School in Long Beach, and YouthBuild culinary students will conduct a cooking lesson on healthy eating at the school. This project follows the improvements to the school’s flag pavilion that were completed by CLIMB C.D.C. on the anniversary of September 11th. Volunteers from the University of Southern Mississippi will also participate in the Day of Caring Project.

CLIMB C.D.C. students are enrolled in the federal YouthBuild program, which provides a comprehensive job training, industry certifications, education skills, and community service to disadvantaged youth. The US Department of Labor recently awarded CLIMB C.D.C. new 3 year funding to support the training of 64 youth. Construction student volunteers are also AmeriCorps members and will be wearing their grey AmeriCorps gear. The AmeriCorps program is supported through funding provided by Volunteer Mississippi.

‘This is a win-win opportunity. The students at Quarles will have an improved facility for their physical education activities and will learn the benefits of eating healthy foods, and our YouthBuild students will perform valuable community service, while practicing their construction and culinary skills,” commented Lori West, CLIMB C.D.C. C.E.O. “We’re pleased to partner with United Way, the University of Southern Mississippi and AmeriCorps to serve elementary school students and young adults in our community,” she added.
