Class Act Teacher of the Month: North Bay Elementary’s Alfredo Childs
It’s fitting that we caught up with this month’s Class Act Teacher in the midst of Superhero Day at North Bay Elementary in Bay St. Louis.
The teacher we are about to tell you about is definitely superman in the eyes of his second-grade students.
Mr. Alfredo Childs classroom is a colorful and comfortable space for students to learn, something the third-year teacher says is a top priority every day. “They’re amazing. I’d do anything and everything for them.”
Childs says he was inspired to enter the classroom by a teacher that made a lasting impact on his own life. “My second-grade teacher back home, she really inspired me to really fall in love with teaching. As I was a struggling reader and she really helped find my reading skills and perfect them.”
As a result, one of Mr. Childs goals is to instill a love of literacy and reading in his second-grade students and to help them prepare for the big third grade assessments. “My biggest passion is helping them find the love for reading. Reading is the most important key to every single thing that anybody will ever do.”
But more than anything, this teacher tells us he hopes his students never lose their sense of curiosity and wonder. “Whatever it is they want to do later in the future, if it is become a teacher or become an athlete, whatever it is, to continue to pursue that goal and dream, never give up!”
This month, we’d like to thank our special Class Act sponsor Whataburger and highlight some of the things they’re doing to help teachers in South Mississippi and across the country.
Specifically, Whataburger has contributed to the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber’s Scholarship Fund to help deserving students. Central Elementary School teacher Bernard Atmore was recently the recipient of a $1,000 What-A-Teacher grant.
We thank Whataburger for their mission of helping educators and students here on the Coast.
