City Tackles Homelessness
The city of Biloxi eyes a vacant school to transform into a resource center for the homeless population in the city.
Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich is asking city council to approve a no-cost lease with Biloxi public schools which would turn Beauvoir Elementary into a homeless assessment and coordination center.
The center would provide mental health and substance abuse services to the nearly 400 homeless individuals and families in Biloxi.
Mayor Gilich believes the vacant elementary school would be an ideal location for the center…but stresses…this will not be a permanent shelter.
“We’re looking at temporary sheltering, temporary is the key word here…the problem is not going to go away…we cannot put it on the hands of the police department to solve this problem, what we want to try to do is address it, it’s controversial in some communities whenever you do something like this but we think it’s the right thing to do and Mayor Gilich wants to make a run at it.”
