City of Ocean Springs using new technology to detect uninsured drivers
The City of Ocean Springs is tackling uninsured drivers with a new technology.
Using automated license plate recognition cameras in several locations throughout the city, the police can distinguish between which vehicles have auto insurance and which are uninsured.
If it’s determined the vehicle does not have insurance a citation will be sent via mail to the car owner.
If you receive a citation from the Ocean Springs Police Department, there are three options: provide proof of insurance at the time the citation was issued, accept and pay program fees instead of court fines and fees, and dispute the charge and appear in court.
According to Police Chief Mark Dunston, “the ultimate goal here is to make sure vehicles have insurance, not to issue citations.”
