City of Ocean Springs renovating historic site Marble Springs
Located near the intersection of Bienville Boulevard and Washington Avenue, Marble Springs Park in Ocean Springs is a historic site that has been hidden for a while, but the city hopes it will become more popular once renovations are done.
Marble Springs is a site where many people in the 1800s would visit to sit in medicinal tubs known as mineral springs.
The tub was considered to have health benefits. It was a popular tourist spot where old Ocean Springs Hotel would bus people to.
The springs have dried since then, but the remnants are still there. However, they are filled in except for one tub under the gazebo.
Next month, all renovations should be done. So far, the city has added a new roof for the gazebo, railing for steps, and more plants. Planning and Grants Administrator Carolyn Martin said, “It’s a very quiet place. There are benefits of enjoying nature. The natural assets that we have here in Ocean Springs, but also kind of connect with our history of how our city was developed, and created and just to know this has also been a place of enjoyment.”
There’s another historic attraction on the property, the original county jail cell is available for viewing as well.
