City of Gulfport honors Seabees for heroic action
Members of the Seabees were honored by the City of Gulfport.
Back in February, members of Naval Construction Battalion 11 rescued two passengers from a submerged car.
Mayor Billy Hewes honored the corpsmen during a city council meeting.
A proclamation was read by Mayor Hewes, with Gulfport Fire and Ward 1 Councilman Kenneth Casey presenting honors.
Gulfport Fire handing out life-savior certificates while Casey handed out challenge coins.
Those being honored saying helping those in need is nothing new to a sailor.
“Today was not a testament to something new. It’s something that proves the fighting spirit and willingness to community all sailors have no matter what rank they have or job. We are willing to help and a force for good,” said Marcos Ramirez, a hospital corpsman first class. “It makes you proud people are willing to jump into action and have the physical ability to provide and carrying people out of the swamp and those conditions. Most of us, there is no thought process. You see a situation you can be an assistance for, you know you’re capable and trained. I don’t think there is much thought aside from the task at hand, saving and preserving human life.”
